An Oneonta school’s “force of nature” was honored Tuesday by A Day Made Better 2012, a nationwide education support program.
Betsy Cunningham, a teacher in the Basic Academic Program, or B.A.P., at Valleyview Elementary School was given the award during a surprise assembly Tuesday at the school.
“It was unbelievable,” she said. “I ended up getting a plaque, a certificate of appreciation from Office Max. I got a large box full of all sorts of classroom supplies.”
A Day Made Better 2012 is run by Adopt-A-Classroom, a nonprofit that helps channel donations to deserving teachers. The program’s co-sponsor is Office Max, which donates the classroom supplies.
Cunningham’s boss, principal Walter M. Baskin, described her as a “force of nature.”
“I have never met a more dynamic or caring teacher in all my years in education,” he said.
Baskin also lauded Cunningham’s “positive energy, her ability to connect with kids and their families and her initiative to take on additional projects to make Valleyview a better school and a fun place to work.”
