Oneonta adds pre-K program
Parents of pre-kindergartners entering the Oneonta City School District will have the Oneonta Family YMCA as a different option next year.
Riverside Elementary Principal Melinda Murdock said the school normally distributes funds from the state universal pre-kindergarten grant to programs at Oneonta Community Christian School, Bugbee Children’s Center, Opportunities for Otsego and Little Lambs, as well as maintaining a program at one of its elementary schools.
In order to better accommodate working parents, the Oneonta Family YMCA will be the fifth provider offered next year, Murdock said.
There will be no program run by the schools, which will make possible a “wraparound” program that allows for coverage during the school day for children who turn four in December, Murdock said. While the 2½ hour pre-kindergarten program is paid for by the grant, parents will have to pay for daycare if they choose it, she said.
