An former Oneonta city resident was arrested March 29 in Otsego County jail recently for assaulting another inmate with a wooden broom and his fists, Otsego deputies said.
Kevin Gerard Vecchione, 26, currently homeless, was arrested for second-degree assault, a felony, deputies said.
On March 21, Vecchione struck a 58-year-old inmate in the head with a broom, while he was cleaning the cell block, deputies said. The following then happened: Vecchione continued to punch the inmate in the head and body. He was treated by jail medical staff. Vecchione, who was in jail on $15,000 bail for felony drug charges, was arraigned on the new charges Friday afternoon.
He was returned on jail on an additional $5,000 bail and faces up to seven years in prison on the new charge, deputies said.
