---- — Oneonta city police have made two arrests in connection with separate reports of fires.
An Oneonta man was accused of setting an automobile on fire earlier this year, police said.
Gable Bugel, 23, was charged Monday with third-degree arson, a felony, Lt. Douglas Brenner said. Bugel was being held in the city lockup pending arraignment.
Bugel is accused of setting fire to a 1987 Oldsmobile 88 that was parked in a lot off Roundhouse Road on May 13, Brenner said. The vehicle, which was worth about $2,000, was destroyed, he said.
When Oneonta firefighters and police reached the scene, flames were rising 15 feet or higher from the car, Brenner said.
Brenner said Detective Joseph Tiemann was the lead investigator in the case, with assistance from detectives Eric Berger and Jennifer Torres.
Last year, Bugel was charged with attempted arson in connection with an incident behind Community Bank on Main Street. The disposition of that case wasn’t immediately available Monday.
In a separate case, Therese M. Sandborn, 28, of 12 Luther St. in Oneonta, was charged Friday with second-degree attempted arson, a felony, Brenner said, and she was arraigned in city court and set to Otsego County jail on bail.
Brenner said Sandborn on Wednesday stopped at the police station and said she had just set her apartment on fire. Police and firefighters went to her apartment and found all burners on the stove were lit and some papers were on top of the stove, he said.
Smoke detectors in the building went off, Brenner said. No one was hurt, he said, and there wasn’t any property damage.
