---- — Nationally known artist Jack (Walter Henry) Beal Jr. died Thursday at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta at age 82, according to his obituary.

Local artist Bunny Joseph said Beal was well-known for his realistic paintings, prints and drawings. His works have been show at such places as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum.

He was also known for the murals he did for the Labor Department during World War II, and has mosaics in the New York City subway. He and his wife, Sandra Frekelton, who was also nationally known for her still lifes and watercolors, lived in this area for many years, Joseph said.

Local artist and entrepreneur Bobby Sharp was a neighbor of Beal and his wife on Franklin Mountain. They had an exhibit of their work in Sharp’s gallery in 2009.

“He was a great master,” Sharp said. “He was such an incredible talent. I was honored to know him.”
