Group unveils hiking trail in Andes

The Shavertown Trail, a new hiking trail in Andes, opened last week with a ceremony and celebration.

About 25 people attended the event at the Shavertown Bridge Boat Launch on Aug. 30, including Andes Town Supervisor Martin Donnelly, New York City Department of Environmental Protection Deputy Commissioner Paul Rush, and Catskill Mountain Club President Steve Berg, according to a media release.

The Shavertown Trail was created through a partnership between the Catskill Mountain Club and New York City. The 5.3-mile trail is located on DEP land but was constructed, and will be maintained, by club-organized volunteers. The DEP also provided trail markers to the club.

“This trail underscores our desire to open more city-owned property for recreation in the Catskills,” Rush said at the opening ceremony, according to the release.

In his comments at the ceremony, Donnelly praised Ann Roberti, a club volunteer who lead the trail building efforts. Roberti and Berg also spoke at the event.

“I was very thrilled to have it opened, it was work that we’d been doing a very long time,” said Roberti, in comments to The Daily Star.

Roberti said that about 12 volunteers, including herself, had worked on constructing the trail since April. “There was a lot of blackberry whacking,” she recalled.

After the speakers finished, a hike up the trail followed.

Asked about the hike Roberti said, “It went really well. Paul Rush actually ran the trail.”

She also clarified that the deputy commissioner changed into his jogging clothes before making the run.

The trail head is located across from the Shavertown Bridge boat launch off state Route 30. It’s the fourth hiking trail to be opened on New York City-owned land in the Catskills.
