---- — The federal Food and Drug Administration is investigating a recall of Chobani yogurt, according to the Associated Press.

Chobani is recalling certain products with expiration dates from Sept. 11 through Oct. 7 for possible mold.

“We won’t sugar-coat it — this type of mold is not pleasant,” read a post dated Sept. 5 on the company’s blog.

Chobani said the mold is “unlikely to have ill health effects upon consumption.” Containers included in the recall will contain the code 16-012, which were produced at Chobani’s Idaho plant.

The problem was brought to Chobani’s attention when some customers reported swelling or bloating of containers. Chobani responded first by pulling yogurt from the store shelves. As of Thursday, the company reported that 95 percent of the affected units have been removed from store shelves.

According to the Associated Press, Chobani CEO Hamid Ulukaya said it was the company’s decision to move to a recall, not the FDA’s. He said the problem was caused by a type of mold that is commonly found in dairy environments. The issue has been “totally fixed,” he said, noting that the mold became a problem because Chobani doesn’t use preservatives in its products.

Ulukaya did not say exactly how many reports of illnesses the company received, but said it was not in the hundreds or thousands.

“Everybody in the company took this hard,” Ulukaya said. “It shook us up.”
