---- — A group of area residents who say they are supporters of slain housewife Jennifer Ramsaran will gather in Chenango County Saturday afternoon for a barbecue to raise funds for her three children, now in the custody of their maternal grandparents.
With their mother dead and their father, accused killer Ganesh “Remy” Ramsaran awaiting trial in Chenango County Correctional Facility, the three children are coping with an ordeal that is expected to linger for many months, if not years, the organizers of the event said.
“I’m hoping we will have a good turnout, with a lot of people coming out to support the kids and the family,” said Tracy Stearns of Cooperstown, one of the founding members of Justice for Jennifer, the group that is sponsoring the fundraising event.
Food, drinks and entertainment will be offered at the event, which kicks off at noon Saturday at the Plymouth Fire Department building on state Route 23 in South Plymouth. An auction and raffle will also be held. No alcohol will be served at the family-friendly gathering, organizers said.
Said Stearns: “Jennifer doesn’t have a voice right now, and those of us who are involved in Justice for Jennifer have become her voice.”
The grandparents who have custody of the three children — Thomas and Carol Renz of South New Berlin — are expected to be at the gathering Saturday, she said.
“The children are under the grandparents’ care, and are doing they best that they can under the circumstances,” Stearns said.
A former project manager for IBM, Ganesh Ramsaran is facing a state prison term of 25 years to life if convicted of the charge of second-degree intentional murder that a grand jury lodged against him in connection with the alleged Dec. 11 homicide.
Authorities have not disclosed how they believe Jennifer Ramsran was killed. She met her husband in the 1990s while both were students at the State University at New Paltz.
Ganesh Ramsaran has pleaded not guilty to the charge. A trial date has not yet been set in the case.
