CCS adopts 'Hawkeyes' as mascot

staff reports

The Cooperstown Central School Board of Education made it official and adopted the nickname “CCS Hawkeyes.”

School officials held off on making a final decision at its last meeting after announcing survey results from current students, teachers, alumni and community members that showed the moniker was the most popular. No vote was made because they said they wanted to make sure there were no infringement issues or conflicts with the Cooperstown team from the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League that goes by Cooperstown Hawkeyes.

Since then, a letter of agreement has been made through Green & Green Attorney at Law between CCS and the team’s owner and president, Thomas Hickey.

Board members made their decision during a special meeting held Tuesday night. Other than media members, no members of the public attended the meeting.

The agreement states that Cooperstown Minor League Baseball Ventures, LLC, is the holder of the trademark “Cooperstown Hawkeyes,” but is willing to allow the school to use the name “Cooperstown Central School Hawkeyes” or “CCS Hawkeyes.”

The school district has agreed it will not use the “C with feathers” logo or anything similar. The board resolved that the school colors of orange and black and the district emblem will be maintained.

“CCS Hawkeyes” will become the “official mascot nickname as it pertains to interscholastic athletic, extra-curricular and academic programs” as of July 13. The Redskins name was retired, effective June 30, at a school board meeting in March by a 6-1 vote.

The agreement states that CCS “shall not commence any action to prevent Cooperstown Minor League Baseball Ventures LLC, or its successors, licensees or assigns” from marketing numerous products including alcoholic beverages.

The district has agreed not to market, sell or distribute products using the name “Hawkeyes” unless the word is accompanied specifically by the initials “CCS” or “Cooperstown Central School” and that it will discourage all persons and entities from referring to the “CCS Hawkeyes” as the “Cooperstown Hawkeyes.”

“Any violation of these provisions will be cause for rendering the agreement null and void,” states the agreement.
