SUNY Oneonta names new police chief

The interim leader of SUNY Oneonta University Police has been named chief, the local public college announced Monday.

Daniel P. Chambers has been appointed chief of police at the State University College at Oneonta after a national search, a media release said.

Chambers had been serving the department as interim chief for almost a year, the release said, and since May of 2012, has been filling in for Barton Ingersoll, who has been on leave from the college.

Hal Legg, SUNY Oneonta spokesman, said Chambers’ annual salary in his new appointment, which is effective this week, is $105,000.

Chambers reports to SUNY Oneonta Vice President for Student Development Steven Perry.

“Dan Chambers has done a tremendous job since joining us as interim chief last year,” Perry said in a prepared statement. “His leadership of the department and engagement with others in local law enforcement have been great assets. We’re pleased to have him fully assume command of our UPD.”

A 27-year member of the state University Police, Chambers began his career at the State University College at Morrisville before joining the force at Binghamton University, the SUNY Oneonta release said. At Binghamton, he was promoted to lieutenant in 2000 and investigator in 2001 before being named deputy chief in 2005.

“I am truly excited and looking forward to this new venture in my life,” Chambers said in the release.

“I consider the members of this department among the most professional that I have ever worked with. The Oneonta community, and especially the SUNY Oneonta community, is such a close-knit group,’’ Chambers said. “I look forward to developing these and creating other relationships in the future.”
