Cherry Valley men face gun, pot charges

Four Cherry Valley residents were arrested on assorted gun and other charges following a weeklong investigation that was conducted by the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, Otsego deputies said.

Last week deputies received information from several sources that Anthony Dewitt Young, 23 was carrying a pistol around the Village of Cherry Valley. The following then occurred, deputies said:

On May 2, deputies located Young on Fish & Game Road and he was found to be in possession of about an ounce of processed marijuana. At his residence, Young was found to be growing seven marijuana plants outside. Inside his residence a loaded .22 caliber Ruger semi-automatic pistol was recovered. Young originally told investigators that he found the gun by a roadway.

He was arrested that day for fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and unlawfully growing of cannabis by an unlicensed person, and unlawful possession of marijuana. He was issued an appearance ticket returnable in Cherry Valley Town Court on May 15.

That afternoon investigators contacted the Albany office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms about the owner of the pistol. It was determined that the pistol and another were missing from a Schenectady residence.

In an interview it was determined that they were stolen by Brandon Yerdon, 18, when he helped the residents move boxes from a garage to their basement in April. He sold one pistol to Young and threw the other in a swamp in Cherry Valley when he learned Young was arrested.

On May 2, Yerdon was arrested on third-degree criminal sale of a firearm, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned in Cherry Valley Town Court and sent to Otsego County jail on $5,000 bail returnable May 22.
