---- — The weekend was busy for Oneonta police, who made 25 arrests of college students for quality-of-life violations, Lt. Douglas Brenner said Monday.

The Oneonta Police Department on Friday and Saturday night had at least four officers on duty, up from the regular shifts of two, from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights, Brenner said.

The arrests of college students were in Center City neighborhoods in the vicinity of Spruce, Center and Maple streets and Ford Avenue, Brenner said, and were initiated by officers on patrol and also as a response to complaints by residents.

The police department continues to assess student behavior to identify “hot spots” for police coverage, Brenner said.

Students were arrested for quality-of-life offenses such as making noise, littering, having an open container of alcohol, public urination and disorderly conduct, Brenner said. The arrests were violations of penal law or Oneonta municipal code and included no misdemeanor charges, he said.

Police also responded to non-student related complaints and incidents, which altogether led to “a real busy weekend,” Brenner said. All calls to the police were answered, he said, and no one was hurt.

“I would call it a successful weekend,” Brenner said.

The Oneonta Fire Department responded to about 20 ambulance calls, including a couple reports of intoxicated patients, Friday through Sunday, which wasn’t an unusual number, officials said.
