Incumbents stumble in Delaware primaries

By Mark Boshnack Staff Writer
The Daily Star

---- — The only local county reporting primary results by deadline Tuesday was Otsego, but counts Wednesday showed some incumbents will face competitive races in the fall’s general election.

In Delaware County, two incumbent supervisors were defeated in the primary. Delhi Supervisor Peter Bracci lost to Mark Tuthill by a vote of 143 to 122. Bracci said he will be running on an independent line, and that he wasn’t surprised by the results. He said his opponent had the backing of a local businessman, so he knew the race would be difficult. The low turnout hurt him, he said, but he added that when people from both parties can cast their vote in the general election “I’m confident I will prevail.”

Tuthill said he also expected a close primary, so ran on the independent line because he felt he would do better in the general election. He said his campaign was funded by a lot of people, including himself, so he isn’t beholden to anyone. He attributed his victory to residents wanting someone who can work with others on the local and county level to get things done.

In Colchester, Supervisor Cindy Donofrio was defeated by Arthur Merrill by a vote of 117-100. She will be running for the position in November on the independent and Conservative lines. She did not want to comment on the results, saying only: “I’m hoping to win in the fall.”

Merrill said the race was too close to call at this point but added: “I’m in a pretty good position.” Besides winning the Republican primary, he is also running as an independent. He attributed his strong showing to his being active in the community for a long time.

He was on the town board for more than 20 years, and filled in as supervisor for six months when there was a recent vacancy.

The complete list of results is as follows; winners are marked with an asterisk but results have not yet been made official:

Five of the 19 towns had contests. Democrats held primaries in Andes and Middletown; Republicans, in Colchester, Delhi and Kortright. The winners and other contestants were:
