---- — Lawyer Andrew Stammel announced he will run for election to the Oneonta Town Board on an independent and Democratic lines.

Stammel, 31, a resident of Oneonta’s West End, in 2011 opened a law firm, which has office on Chestnut Street in the city of Oneonta. In 2012, he began work as a part-time administrator at the State University College at Oneonta, dealing with employment and education law compliance issues, a media release said.

“The big issues confronting the town of Oneonta at this time are too important for us to continue business as usual,” Stammel said in the release. Tough questions before the town include a town/city merger, fair taxation, shared services, economic development, natural gas drilling and protection of our water and resources, among others, he said.

“People of the town deserve thoughtful and hard-working government officials who are responsive to their requests, advocate on their behalf, and plan for a brighter future,” Stammel said in a prepared statement. “I have the experience, desire, and ability to advocate for the people and to collaborate with other government officials, local companies, and institutions to promote and support our town’s future.”

Stammel, a Stamford Central School graduate, attended Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania, and served a year with an AmeriCorps contingent based in Delhi. He worked as a Delaware County Social Services caseworker and later, he graduated from Syracuse University College of Law with a juris doctor and a certificate in Family Law and Social Policy.

He frequently represents assigned clients in local courts and recently joined the ARC Otsego Board of Directors.
