---- — A Utica woman was arrested Wednesday on charges of stealing about $14,000 from an local 82-year-old woman, state police at Oneonta said.

Cathaline L. Aylmer, 42, was charged with third-degree grand larceny and second-degree possession of a forged instrument, both felonies, troopers said. The charges stem from incidents described below.

Aylmer sold frozen meat and gave a used freezer to an 82-year-old woman from the village of Sidney, troopers said, and when the freezer broke, the two women went shopping for a replacement.

Aylmer befriended the woman, said she needed money and asked her to write a check for about $5,400, indicated that she would return the check after she showed it to her boss to reflect a large sale, troopers said.

However, Aylmer cashed the check and allegedly stole and forged two of the woman’s checks totaling about $8,500, troopers said.

Aylmer was transported from Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in Westchester County for processing at the state police station in Oneonta on Wednesday and was returned to that prison after arraignment in Oneonta City Court in the local case, troopers said.

Aylmer was convicted of grand larceny in Clinton County, according to the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, and she began a sentence of three to seven years in April.
