Rich Maxwell, assessor for the city of Oneonta, says there has been some confusion regarding the Residential STAR Renewal Program instituted by the state Tax and Finance Department, and he has been getting calls, particularly from local senior citizens.
“This renewal program through the state website and phone line is for people primarily under the age of 65,” he said Wednesday. “The Senior/Enhanced STAR program for those 65 and older will be administered the same way it always has been. In the first week of January, seniors will get mailed a renewal notice and renewal form from their local assessor.
“Seniors will need to fill out the enclosed RP-425-rnw renewal form, attach a copy of the front page of their 2013 (income from 2012) federal income tax forms and return these documents to their assessor by March 1, 2014. If you do not know if you have the Senior/Enhanced STAR, all you need do is to look at your school tax bill. It will state there if you are receiving any exemption and what type it is.”
