---- — A Schenevus teen received a top national honor from the national Holstein Association.

Cody Sears, 16, a junior at Cherry-Valley Springfield Central School, was one of eight finalists in Holstein Association USA’s annual Young Distinguished Junior Member competition. It’s the top award for members up to age 16, and honors dairy project work and involvement with other agricultural and community organizations, according to a media release. The finalists will be honored at the 2013 National Holstein Convention July 7 to 11 in Indianapolis.

Sears said he appreciated the recognition from the national organization. He had to submit a junior-member book, which collects information on his activities in dairy competitions, school and community activities.

“To have it selected at the national level — wow,” he said. “It is quite an accomplishment.”

He also had to submit essays and be interviewed at the state and national level to earn the recognition.

When he graduates he hopes to study environmental science and become a forest ranger. He will continue to raise heifers and show on the county, state and national level.

He “loves” doing field work for the family farm that milks 45 Holsteins.

“It’s given me a real work ethic,” he said. “I have to thank my parents for that.”

He is Eagle Scout in Troop 168 in Worcester.

New York Holstein Association Executive Manager Patsy Gifford said of the achievement: “It’s huge. We love it when our juniors are recognized for their achievements.

“He will do well in whatever he chooses to do. He is a well-rounded young man,” who was was recently elected to the association’s junior executive. “I expect a lot from him in the future.”
