Assemblyman, wife honored for service to Schoharie school

Many years of service to a Schoharie Central School club earned Assemblyman Pete Lopez and his wife, Lisa, recognition at a recent board of education meeting. He talked about the honor on Wednesday.

The couple, who are residents of the village of Schoharie, were presented an award, last month, for their role as advisers to the Schoharie Adventure Club.

Lopez, 53, a district graduate, said the group was the successor to the school’s ski club. He restarted the program 17 years ago, he said, and his wife had been very involved with the program for many years as well. The two stepped down at the end of last season, citing work and family commitments. The couple have had three children graduate from the school, and another is a senior.

“It was an honor for my wife and I to be recognized for something we truly enjoy being a part of,” Lopez said. “Our household believes strongly in volunteerism.”

Schoharie Superintendent Brian Sherman said Lopez and his wife are “phenomenal parents and big supporters of the school.” It seemed only appropriate for the board to thank them for their years of service, he said.

Lopez said he learned to ski when he attended SUNY Cobleskill. Getting involved with the club was his way of giving back to his community and giving others an opportunity, he said.

“You owe a lot back to those who helped you growing up,” Lopez said, and because of this, he has done a lot of volunteer work in the community, with a focus on youth development. But while he doesn’t do it for the recognition, he said, “it’s very gratifying” to receive such honors.
