New York’s attorney general recently urged New Yorkers to use free consumer protections offered in the wake of the Target security breach.
In December, Target agreed to a demand by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to provide credit monitoring and identity theft protections to potential victims of a vast Target security breach.
Anyone who was a Target customer may register for free credit monitoring at creditmonitoring.target.com, the attorney general said in a media release.
The free monitoring, offered through Experian’s ProtectMyID, will provide a copy of a credit report, daily credit monitoring, identity theft insurance allowed by law and access to assistance from a fraud resolution agent, the release said.
To register, consumers need to request an activation code by entering their name and email address at creditmonitoring.target.com before April 23, the release said. Consumers will receive an email from Target within five days with an activation code and instruction on registration, which is required by April 30.
