Forecasters: Big snowstorm on the way
A winter storm expected to move into the area this afternoon could bring eight to 12 inches of snow by Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Binghamton.
The forecast calls for the storm to be heavy at times, especially later in the day. The snow could mix with sleet before tapering off Thursday morning, according to the forecast. The Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning from 2 p.m. today until 1 p.m. Thursday, which means severe winter-weather conditions are expected. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous.
Because of the forecast, the Oneonta Police Department reminds motorists and residents that the city has a snow-emergency ordinance that requires all vehicles to be off its streets when an accumulation of 2 ½ inches or more has fallen. Vehicles that are left on the street are subject to ticket and tow at the owners expense. Anyone with any questions may call the police department at 432-1111.
