Local couple welcomes first baby born in 2013

The first baby born in Otsego County in 2013 is Braelyn McKenna White, Bassett Medical Center spokeswoman Karen Huxtable said.

The baby was born at 6:09 a.m. Tuesday at the Birthing Center at the Cooperstown facility to Devin White and Kimberly Perry of Oneonta, Huxtable said. Braelyn weighed 7 pounds, 5.3 ounces. Mother and daughter are doing fine.

Perry, 32, said while she still has some pain, “it was so worth it.” The hospital made them aware of the distinction about an hour after the baby was born. “It was exciting to have a beautiful baby in my arms,” she said. “I can’t stop staring at her. I’m going to enjoy every single minute with her. She is that perfect.”

White, 32, said while it was exciting to have the first baby of the year, “knowing that she was a healthy, beautiful baby is more than anyone can was ask for.”

Perry was due to give birth Dec. 26. Regular contractions started without inducement at about 8 p.m. Monday, and the couple arrived at Basset at 3:30 a.m.

The couple got engaged Dec. 28, and the two have lived together for three years. No date has been set for the wedding.

Besides her fiance, Perry’s mother, Denise Perry, also of Oneonta, was there for the birth.

The baby was delivered naturally and everything went quickly and smooth, White said. “She is the most beautiful thing that has come into my life besides Kimberly.”

The name has no significance other than that couple agreed both parts work well together, he said.

She is a dental assistant at Aaronson, Thompson & Lavine in Oneonta. He is a catering manager at Hartwick College. White said he will be returning to work later this week but his fiancee has yet to determine when she will return.
