---- — A man accused last year of torturing a horse in the city of Oneonta has been arrested on similar charges stemming from an incident in the town of Maryland, Otsego County deputies said Monday.

Donald Lane, 42, was charged Wednesday with torturing or injuring an animal and felony charges of burglary and grand larceny on a warrant issued by Maryland Town Court, Sheriff Richard Devlin Jr. said.

Lane was arraigned in Worcester Town Court and sent to Otsego County jail, where he remains held on $20,000 cash or $200,000 bond bail, Devlin said.

Lane was accused of breaking into a barn in Maryland on Dec. 2 and stealing a horse, Devlin said. Lane allegedly rode the horse to the point that it was injured, in failing health and facing possible euthanization, Devlin said. The sheriff said he didn’t know the disposition of the horse Monday.

The Maryland case was similar to one in the city of Oneonta last year, Devlin said, and Lane faces other charges in other cases.

In November, a horse that Lane rode from Schenevus to Oneonta had to be euthanized, Oneonta city police said.

City police charged Lane on Nov. 18 with torturing or injuring an animal, a misdemeanor under state Agriculture and Markets law. The unshod horse had an injury to its right rear leg and to its hooves and originally was taken away by a veterinarian for emergency care, police said.

Lane also was charged with resisting arrest, having an open container of alcohol and littering for throwing away a beer can, city police said.
