Staff Report
The Daily Star

---- — Twenty-six animals died when a barn burned at a Masonville property early Wednesday morning, a fire official said.

The barn on county Route 20, near state Route 206, was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived at about 4 a.m., said Masonville Fire chief Gary Mott. The cause is still under investigation.

One of those living on the property, Brad Jump, was injured trying to rescue the animals that include goats, horses, rabbits, dogs and a donkey.

He was taken to Tri-Town Regional Hospital in Sidney and transferred to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse with burns, but was released. Some of the siding on the house was melted.

The residents were home at the time but asleep. A neighbor woke them up to tell them about the blaze.

The property was owned by David Maltera of Norwalk, Conn., but Jump and his grandfather, Berctis Jump, lived on the property and cared for the animals, Delaware County Emergency Services Director Rich Bell said. Masonville received mutual aid from Bainbridge, Sidney and Trout Creek Fire Departments. Firefighters were at the scene for seven hours.
