Otsego reports first rabies case of 2013

---- — A raccoon found in a barn in Middlefield on Wednesday tested positive Friday for rabies, becoming the first such test in Otsego County this year, according to a release from the county Department of Health.

A cow that was in contact with the raccoon was up to date with its vaccinations and boosted.

There is no known human contact. The raccoon was euthanized and sent to the state lab for testing.

Rabies is a fatal viral infection that can be transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal or contact with its saliva to broken skin or mucus membranes.

The public is cautioned to stay away from any stray or wild animals and instruct children to do so. It is state law that all dogs, cats and ferrets be vaccinated for rabies.
