---- — Assemblyman Clifford W. Crouch, R-Guilford, has launched an online petition drive that seeks to repeal the NY SAFE Act, a state gun-control law that was passed and signed into law last month in the aftermath of a grade-school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

The new law fails “to address the root cause of the horrific acts in Newtown and elsewhere, which is, without a doubt, a mental-health issue,” Crouch said in a media release announcing the drive.

“We now have a controversial law that infringes on the rights of law-abiding firearm owners by treating them as criminals, among many other things, and it does nothing to actually address the violence that is committed by people with illegal firearms across the state.”

The petition can be found on Crouch’s official Assembly webpage at

Crouch also said he will be participating in a protest against the NY SAFE Act in Albany on Feb. 28.

“People are very upset about this new law,” he said. “Let’s face it, criminals are not going to follow the law and the need to amend or repeal legislation has never been more evident.”
