A 44-year-old Sidney man was charged with making a false bomb after his estranged girlfriend found the device in a desk drawer, police said Wednesday.
Sidney Village Police Chief Michael Hood said the woman, who was in the process of moving out of a Bird Avenue home, reported finding the device to village police, who in turn enlisted assistance from the state police bomb squad in Albany.
An X-ray inspection of the device determined it was inert and had no explosives or trigger mechanism, and was unable to function, police said.
Hood said Kevin Duvall did not explain why he made the device when he turned himself in to village police.
Duvall is being held for lack of $5,000 bail after being arraigned on a charge of second-degree placing a false bomb or hazardous substance.
