to air on Channel 23
The Daily Star 2013 Regional Spelling Bee will air on Time Warner Cable Channel 23 at the following times:
4 p.m. Saturdays, March 9 and 16; 2 p.m. Sundays, March 10 and 17; and 5 p.m. March 14.
Twenty-two contestants competed in the 11th annual spelling bee, which was held Saturday, March 2, at the Goodrich Theater on the SUNY Oneonta campus. Sidney Central School eighth-grader Molly Youngs won the bee after nine rounds of competition and will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., from May 28-30.
SUNY Oneonta was one of several sponsors of the spelling bee, and staff from the college documented the event for television broadcast.
Ice fishing deadline nears
Ice anglers must remove all ice fishing shanties on the ice by March 15, the state Department of Environmental Conservation reminded New Yorkers in a recent media release.
According to the DEC, shanties that remain after the deadline can create navigation hazards for snowmobiles as well as for boats once the ice melts.
Shanties that fall partially through the ice become hard to remove and create hazards to snowmobiles and other motorized vehicles on the ice. Shanties that remain after ice out (when the ice has melted away) become navigation hazards for boats.
Owners that fail to remove their shanty by March 15 can be ticketed and face a maximum possible fine of $100.
