Village of Morris gets federal grant

The village of Morris has received a Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant for a total of $2,475,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture — Rural Development’s Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program.

The funding includes a $1,725,000 loan and $750,000 grant.

The money is to be used for water-management projects, including construction of a water storage tank that will replace the existing 130-year-old tank. To ensure safe drinking water, Morris will also replace water mains and install individual water meters for each service as well as a section of pipe for increased chlorine contact time.

“Supporting New York’s rural communities with smart investments for water management is pivotal for communities like the village of Morris and its local economy. It improves water quality and spurs economic development,” said Sen. Charles Schumer in a media release. “This USDA Rural Development investment for the Village of Morris will improve local access to clean water (and) in turn will help enhance quality of life in the community and lead the way for further economic development in the region.”

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand also commented on the funding in the same release.

“When we invest in key water infrastructure like this, we can deliver clean drinking water to more families in the village of Morris, and help strengthen the local economy,” Gillibrand said. “Upgrading water infrastructure is an effective way to attract new businesses and support new local jobs. And by making these investments at the federal level, we can help hold the line on property bills to help Morris families keep more of what they earn.”
