The driver of a milk tanker headed to the Chobani yogurt plant in Columbus was seriously injured Friday night when the rig overturned while headed downhill on State Route 23 in New Berlin, authorities said Tuesday.
The accident report was not available from state police, but other officials said the driver was taken to Upstate Medical Hospital.
New Berlin Police Chief Domenick Commesso said he is hoping that the state Department of Transportation looks into a string of truck accidents, most of them on State Route 8, involving trucks headed to the Chobani factory.
“Something needs to be done here,” Commesso said.
He said state police patrols have had a positive impact on traffic safety.
“The state police have been doing a great job helping us out,” he said, adding that many of the long-distance haulers are apparently unfamiliar with local roads, and new road signs are needed on the state routes.
The Daily Star reported last week that 26 tractor trailer accidents have been reported on State Route 8 in South New Berlin over the past three years.
