Opera musicians to perform
The annual Florence High Memorial Chamber Music Concert will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday at the Pierstown Grange Hall, featuring musicians from the Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra. This community event is open to all at no charge.
Glimmerglass Festival violinist Ubaldo Valli has arranged the program, including works by Stravinsky, Mozart, Bridge, Hidas and Mignone. The Grange is at 137 Wedderspoon Hollow Road in Cooperstown, off county Route 28 (Pierstown Road). For more information, call 264-3069 or 547-1347.
Middleburgh duo to play at library
This month’s Middleburgh library concert will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday and will feature Magpie. Terry Leonino and Greg Artzner, who make up the duo, are now residents of Middleburgh and are celebrating 40 years of making music together.
Leonino and Artzner began to play music together in Kent, Ohio, in 1973. Leonino plays harmonica, mandolin, fretted dulcimer and rhythm guitar. Artzner is guitarist .
Magpie plays traditional, classic country, swing, and blues of the 1920s and ‘30s, and contemporary songs written by themselves and others.
In 2000, Magpie collaborated with scientists at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and created a “museum musical,” the first of its kind, using a museum display as the set for the show. The show, “Tales of the Blue Crab,” premiered at Smithsonian’s Discovery Theatre.
Fetish Lane concert to aid Inn
There will be a benefit concert from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday for the ongoing restoration of The Major’s Inn in Gilbertsville. Fetish Lane, a well-known local bluegrass band, will perform. There is no charge, but a free-will offering will be taken, with the money going toward the work being done on the lower level of the inn.
The public is invited to come early, bring a picnic lunch, a blanket and chairs, and relax on the spacious side lawn of the Inn. In case of rain, the concert will be held in the ballroom. Refreshments will be available.

‘Shakespeare’ play to be reprised
“The Compleat Works of William Shakespeare Abridged” has returned the Cooperstown Theatre Festival. Performances are at 8 p.m. Saturday, and Aug. 23 and 24. A matinee is scheduled for 3 p.m. Aug. 25.
Smithy Center for the Arts’ Glimmer Globe Theatre Company will present the reprise. Though originally this weekend was scheduled to feature “Flowers for Algernon,” it was replaced due to casting difficulties.

The Cooperstown Theatre Festival is at 7163 State Highway 80 north of Cooperstown in the town of Springfield.
