Fabulous Fridays feature food, music

Main Street Oneonta expanded its Fabulous Fridays celebration this season, and those interviewed at some of Friday’s activities said the move has been a success.

The event, which includes a variety of activities at various downtown venues, is sponsored by the downtown promotion organization. It started in 2010 as Fabulous First Fridays during milder weather months.

It was expanded this year to the first and third Fridays from May to September. Main Street Oneonta President Rachel Lutz Jessup said “it has been great.” It took awhile for people to get into the routine, but “it’s giving downtown more visibility. People come down to the venues and see what Main Street has to offer,” she said.

One of those who came down to listen to the live music in Muller Plaza was Juliana Handbridge of Oneonta.

“It’s nice to be outside and listen to the music and enjoy the downtown atmosphere,” she said. She has been a regular participant and is glad the event was expanded.

One of Friday’s activities was a 6 p.m. ribbon cutting in the parking garage walkway for the Otsego Chamber of Commerce kiosk and brochure exchange. Chamber Executive Director Barbara Ann Heegan said her organization is gifting the kiosk to the city. It was an idea of Hartwick College interns that addressed a real need, she said. The brochures from different organizations and events can be brought to the chamber office and they will be rotated each month.

At the Oneonta History Center, board member Karen Anderson and volunteer Barbara Brandt were ready to help people with the “Old Time Photo Ops.” It gave people an opportunity to have their picture taken in vintage clothing. The items, including a fringe leather bomber jacket and top hat, were all donated by the State University College at Oneonta theater department, Anderson said. While there haven’t been many participants so far, it tends to get busier as the evening progresses, she said.

Fabulous Fridays have been an important way for The Greater Oneonta Historical Society to get its message to the public. Anderson said that it is not unusual for people to come into the center, during an activity, who otherwise didn’t know it existed. Director Bob Brzozowski said the organization is co-sponsoring a cruise-in at the Sept. 6 Fabulous Friday.
