---- — A talented Laurens senior will have a chance to shine at her first solo art show today.

About 10 creations of 17-year-old Xanthian Lincoln will be on display outside the multipurpose before and during the Laurens Central School fall concert, which starts at 6:30 p.m.

This is the first time one student has been featured at such a show, Superintendent Ramona Wenck said, adding that Lincoln has worked hard to earn the show, she said.

“She is very talented,” Wenck said.

Lincoln said she will be showing a number of portraits in acrylic and charcoal, and sculptures.

“I am very excited,” she said. Although she’s been in other art shows, this is her first solo exhibit. “I think it will be really helpful in pursuing a career.”

Laurens art teacher Karen Rowe said Lincoln’s work has excelled especially since she attended classes at the New York State Summer School of the Arts at SUNY Fredonia last July. Rowe has encouraged other students to attend, but Lincoln is the first she knows who participated.

“It’s quite an accomplishment,” Rowe said. It made her much more confident about her art and the results will be there for people to see, Rowe said. “I am hoping it (the show) inspires others.”

Most of the work, Lincoln said, she made in the four-week summer class, where she first learned to draw in charcoal. She said she likes the way it blends on whatever surface she’s working on.

As instructive as her classes at Laurens have been, summer school showed “the variety of everything there is to learn,” she said.

Lincoln said she has always been interested in art, and wants a career that uses her talents. She said she’s waiting to hear from colleges in New York City, including Pratt Institute and Fashion Institute of Technology, and that she hopes her freshman year gives her guidance about which way to go in her artistic pursuits.
