Group to host forum on education

An education coalition will present a forum Nov. 6 in Oneonta for parents and teachers concerned about the impact of recent mandates regarding students.

The Oneonta Area for Public Education, in partnership with the Oneonta Teachers Association and New York State United Teachers, will host a “speak out,” according to a media release. The forum will be at in the Morris Conference Center at the State University College at Oneonta from 6 to 8 p.m.

The coalition, the Oneonta Teachers Association and NYSUT are calling for a moratorium on high-stakes consequences for students and teachers resulting from the state’s standardized tests.

The state Department of Education and the education commissioner have “have consistently and systematically ignored the concerns of parents and educators throughout the state,” Danielle Boudet, a parent in the Morris Central School District and founding member of Oneonta Area for Public Education, said in the release.

The Nov. 6 forum will give parents and educators a chance to be heard, according to Betsy Bloom, a member of Oneonta Area for Public Education.

“People understand that their fundamental rights as citizens have been undercut by the way the NYS Board of Regents and Commissioner John King have imposed a reform agenda that results in too much testing, overwhelmed children and demoralized teachers,” Bloom said in a prepared statement.

The Oneonta Area for Public Education is a coalition of parents, educators and community members dedicated to reclaiming public education in the Oneonta area, the release said.
