Alcohol use and speed were factors when a young man identifying himself as a Walton resident was thrown from an all-terrain vehicle and left seriously injured Monday, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department reported.
Undersheriff Craig DuMond said investigators are trying to establish the man’s identity after he falsely identified himself as Antonio Ranacelli, 18, of Walton. The man sustained potentially life-threatening injuries when the 2003 Yamaha ATV he was driving off Dryden Road in the town of Tompkins overturned Monday as he left the roadway to enter a trail through the woods, deputies said.
The man was listed in serious but stable condition Tuesday at Albany Medical Center. He was flown to the hospital from the scene by LifeNet of New York helicopter.
The ongoing investigation has revealed that alcohol consumption and speed were factors in the accident, DuMond said.
Criminal charges are expected to be brought against the man, he noted. DuMond said. Albany police officers went to the hospital and got a blood sample that helped investigators determine the man had been drinking before the incident.
