B-G/A's Ross sets sectional record

Staff Report

Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton senior Dustin Ross set a Section Four indoor track record in the 300 meters Saturday in the Southern Tier Invitational at Cornell University.

Ross, a two-time Daily Star Athlete of the Year in outdoor track, crossed in 35.32 seconds, breaking the mark of 35.54 set by Waverly's Jake Puusalu in 2005. Puusalu's hand-held time was actually 35.3, but that converts to a fully-automated time of 35.54.

"It's huge," said B-G/A Robb Munro, who added that Ross' time is the fourth fastest nationally this season, according to armorytrack.com. "It blew my mind. I knew he was ready for a big breakthrough, but I didn't think he'd run nine-tenths (of a second) faster than last year (at this meet)."

Making it more impressive, Munro said, was that Ross was not pushed. Running in lane 7, he made up the stagger on the boy running in the eighth lane in the first 50 meters and "then it was just him and the crowd," Munro said.

If Ross continued at his same pace for a 400, he would have crossed in 47.09. The Section Four record in the 400 of 46.99 was set by Unatego graduate Darren Hall in 1984.

"It probably translates into low-48s, because you're going to go a little slower in the final 100," Munro said.

Sidney senior Ashley Mahlmeister placed second in the triple jump, and third in the long jump and 55 hurdles.

Mahlmeister, a three-time Daily Star Athlete of the Year, triple jumped 36 feet, 7 inches. Her best long jump was 16-11 1/2 and she crossed in 8.51 in the hurdles.

Oneonta High's Christy O'Connor placed fifth in the high jump, clearing 4-11 3/4.

Other area boys who placed were Sidney's Josh Searles, who finished third in 55 hurdles (8.53), and OHS' Ryan Gracy, who placed fifth in the triple jump (39-10). B-G/A's 1,600 relay team was third in 3:40.88.

Cornell is hosting the His and Hers Invitational on Friday.

Mike Watson Invitational

Walton's Cody Reed earned outstanding wrestler honors for upper weights (145-285) in helping the Warriors to a seventh-place finish in the 24-team Mike Watson Invitational at Watkins Glen.

Reed won the 171-pound final with a 4-3 victory over defending Division II state champion Cody Hutchinson of Bath. Hutchinson also lost, 11-8, to Reed last season in the Watson Invitational.

Hutchinson scored an early takedown in the first period on the edge of the mat, but Reed escaped and took Hutchinson down late in the first period for a 3-2 lead. Hutchinson earned an escape late in the second period to tie the score, and Reed regained the lead with an escape early in the third period.

"Both had opportunities for takedowns, close ones on the edge of the mat," Walton coach Rick Armstrong said. "It was an action-packed 4-3 match."

Last season, Reed finished runner-up in Section Four and did not qualify for the state meet.

"Cody watched the kid win a state title over (Greene's Tyler) Beckwith," Armstrong said of last season's state meet. "Ever since, I think he's been itching to wrestle (Hutchinson)."

Reed's record this season is 17-0.

Jon Conklin also won a title for Walton, beating Owego's Troy Forbes, 5-0, in the 119-pound final.

Conklin was the fourth seed in a weight class that featured five sectional place-winners. In the semifinals, Conklin met Horseheads' Brant Page for the third time this season and won, 3-1. Page defeated Conklin by pin in their match in the Elmira Tournament and won, 11-0, at the Oneonta Rotary Tournament last weekend.

Evan Boyd placed third at 189 pounds, and Jimmy MacDonald (140) and Dustin VanValkenburg (145) each placed fourth for the Warriors, who host Deposit on Tuesday.

Newark Valley won the title with 210 1/2 points, 1/2-point better than Bath. Walton had 118 points.

Eastern States Classic

Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton's Victor Coronado won all five of his matches, including a 1-0 victory over Amsterdam's Guiseppi Lanzi in the final to win the 140-pound final in the Eastern States Classic at Sullivan County Community College.

With the final scoreless in the third period, Coronado was close to reversing Lanzi, who then scissored Coronado's head, an illegal move that led to the lone point of the match.

Coronado went 5-0 over the two-day tournament, which is the largest regular-season tournament in New York.

"He controlled pretty much all of his other matches," B-G/A coach Brandon MacNaught said of Coronado, who is 22-1 this season. "He wrestled a really nice tournament, a really smart tournament."

The only other Section Four wrestler to earn a title was Greene's Tyler Beckwith at 171.

B-G/A travels to Sherburne-Earlville on Wednesday.

Dan Wickham Classic

Justin Roberts, Kyle Bishop and Nick Shaw earned individual titles for runner-up Delhi, which finished four points behind Onteora in the Dan Wickham Classic at Unatego.

Onteora had 146 points. The host school finished fifth with 76 points _ two more than Sidney, which placed sixth in the nine-team event. The tournament originally had 14 teams, but Monticello, Tuxedo, Saugerties, Ellenville, Middletown and Liberty withdrew because of Saturday's snow storm.

Spartans wrestlers David Carman and Tyler Newman earned outstanding wrestler honors.

Carman won, 11-9, Onteora's Chet Cochrane _ a Section Nine champion last season _ to win the 125-pound title and earn top wrestler honors for lower weights (96-135). Newman won the 171-pound title by technical fall over Berne/Knox/Westerloo, 16-0, and was named top wrestler among upper weights (140-285). Newman, a senior, won his tournament-record fifth title.

Roberts won the 119-pound final with a 5-1 victory over Onteora's Joda Hoffman. Bishop (145) and Shaw (215) won their finals by pin. Bishop needed 4 minutes, 46 seconds to beat Donny VanBuren of Onteora. Shaw pinned Tyler Leavine of Saranac 19 seconds into overtime.

Delhi had three other finalists, including Shawn Neumann, who lost by medical forfeit to Unatego's Shawn Hanrahan at 152. Neumann won his semifinal match by default over Onteora's Dean Hoffum. Neumann suffered a head injury when he was slammed to the mat by Hoffum and could not wrestle in the final, Unatego coach Vince Ruggiero said.

The Bulldogs' Marty Cole lost by pin in 2:36 to Berne/Knox/Westerloo's Keith Domerath in the 285-pound final and Delhi's Pat Cobane fell, 8-6, to Sidney's Jon Mercurio at 160.

Sidney won two other titles, with Scott Stafford winning a three-wrestler round-robin at 103 and Tyler Koza downing Saranac's Trevor Goddeau, 10-5, at 112.
