Defense lifts Unatego to softball win

Staff Report

The second of Unatego's two hits, a single to center by Rachel Mugford in the sixth inning, scored the go-ahead run for the Spartans in their 2-1 Midstate Athletic Conference victory at Unadilla Valley on Friday.

Blake Shelton walked to lead off the Spartans' sixth. She advanced to second on a groundout by winning pitcher Kailey Kinsella. Mugford's single scored Shelton.

The Storm outhit Unatego, 8-2, but the Spartans turned two double plays.

"They played pretty good defense," said UV coach Eileen Lawyer, whose team committed five errors while Unatego didn't make any. "It was one of those games where defense prevailed."

Kristen Elliott struck out four in a two-hitter and also went 2-for-3 for UV. Hannah Johnson went 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Storm (5-7, 4-5), who play host to Harpursville at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Kinsella had eight strikeouts for Unatego.

Holli Oberacker then walked and intentionally got into a rundown between first and second. Dulkis scored on the play and Oberacker made it back to first.
