For the second time in as many days, SUNY Delhi freshman Chris Mason set a meet record in the NJCAA Division III Championships meet.
Mason won the 5,000 meters in a meet-record time of 15 minutes, 15.15 seconds Friday on the second day of the three-day meet at Delhi. His time bested the previous record of 15:23.80 set by Walton and SUNY Delhi graduate Justin Wood in 2004.
"What I like about him is he has kind of an old-school work ethic," Delhi coach Bob Backus said of Mason, who set a meet record in 10,000 on Thursday.
It's Mason's third national championship at Delhi. He also won a cross-country title in the fall.
Backus said Mason started to pull away from runner-up Zak Williamson of Alfred around the two-mile mark. Williamson crossed in 15:35.80. Delhi's Eric Stermer was third in 15:48.93.
Mason also qualified for the finals of the 1,500, crossing in 4:23.79. Mason's run a 4:10 this season, but Backus said he just wanted to advance to today's final. Teammates Stermer and Josh Schultheis also qualified for the 1,500 final.
Harper College leads the men's team standings with 72 points _ 18 more than second-place Cobleskill. Third-place DuPage has 48 and Delhi is next with 42.
Cobleskill's Aldin Gomez placed second in the decathlon with 5,196 points. DuPage's Ben Kerrigan won with 5,493.
Four athletes from area colleges qualified for the final in the 800. Eric Graber and Emille Barnett qualified 1-2, crossing 1:57.29 and 1:57.78, respectively, for Cobleskill. Delhi's Josh Schultheis was third in 1:57.95 and Rich Esposito qualified sixth in 1:57.59 _ a personal-best time for him.
The Broncos' 1,600 relay team qualified for the finals. It crossed in 3:28.64. Esposito had a split of 51.3 and Afton graduate Matt Davy split in 42.1.
Cobleskill's David Suarez was the fastest among qualifiers for the 100 (10.86). He also qualified fourth for the 200 (22.39). Teammate Carlton Wildman had the fastest qualifying time in the 400 (49.6)
On the women's side, Herkimer leads with 50 points, followed by Gloucester (41), DuPage (35) and Cobleskill (31). Delhi is 11th with 10 points.
Cobleskill's April Ackermann placed fourth in the 3,000 steeplechase, crossing in 13:24.27.
