May 12, 2008 04:00 am Emille Barnett earned first-team All-American honors Saturday by winning the 800-meter run, helping SUNY Cobleskill's men to a program-best second-place finish at the NJCAA Division III Track and Field Championships at SUNY Delhi. The Fighting Tigers, who are in their final year at the NJCAA level, scored 116 points to tie the College of DuPage. Harper College scored 143 points to win its second straight championship. The host Broncos placed fourth with 86 points. "I'm proud of our guys," said Delhi coach Bob Backus, whose program has hosted four national meets. "We've never run poorly at nationals here. I thought we'd be fifth or sixth, but our guys stepped up and we scored real well in 10 events. ... And hats off to Cobleskill as they ride off into the four-year ranks with two solid second-place finishes." Barnett won the 800 in 1 minute, 56.41 seconds to earn one of two national crowns for area men. Delhi's Eric Stermer won the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:48.89. The top two finishers in each event earn All-American honors. Delhi's Josh Schultheis just missed in the 800, finishing third in 1:57.31 _ .02 seconds behind Alfred State runner-up Hector Cuero. Cobleskill received a third-place finish from Joseph Appah in the 400 (49.48) and from its 400 relay team of Leon Thompson, Brad Boice, Jon Figueroa and David Suarez (42.81). Delhi's Claude Davis, an Edmeston graduate, placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 125 feet, 10 inches. Delhi's Chris Mason, who won the 10,000 on Thursday and the 5,000 on Friday _ both in meet-record times _ earned male track athlete of the meet honors. Cobleskill's women finished second for the third time in the past four seasons, scoring 86 points. Herkimer, which features Unadilla Valley graduates and sisters Sarah and Theresa Lazarus, won the championship with 153 points. Delhi finished 13th with 17. Villanova cleared 8-11 in the pole vault. She tied College of DuPage's Leah Kuzmicz, but cleared 8-11 before her opponent to win the crown and earn All-American. Villanova joined Brittany Armstrong, Regina Morgan and Tamarra Jenkins in winning the 1,600 (4:16.39). Villanova also placed third in the 400 hurdles (1:13.14), finishing behind Herkimer's Amanda Davey (1:07.99) and Theresa Lazarus (1:12.1).
