Milford cruises to title

Staff Report

Milford's Gabby Skillen did it all Saturday.

Twice.

Skillen pitched two complete games and doubled twice in each, helping the Wildcats' softball team win the championship of the four-team Milford Booster Club Tournament.

Skillen struck out four and walked one in a 16-1 victory over Laurens, turning the tournament final into a five-inning game that ended via the 15-run mercy rule. After taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Milford (11-5) took control by scoring seven times in the second.

Milford won its opener against Sharon Springs, 9-4, as Skillen struck out 10, walked one and scattered six hits.

"She had a hell of a day for us," Milford coach Jim Weir said of Skillen, who allowed a fifth-inning homer to Laurens' Leandra Spoor in the championship game, cutting the Wildcats' advantage to 14-1. Milford ended it by scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Skillen's batterymate, Kayla Thorn, went 4-for-5 with six RBIs and two runs in the final. Weir said Thorn's batting average is in the upper-.400s.

Spoor also doubled for Laurens (7-9).

Rachel Schultes finished 3-for-4 against Sharon Springs, which yielded two hits apiece to Skillen and Evonne Birtell. With the score tied at 2-2 in the sixth, Skillen started a three-run rally with an RBI double. Mariah Coville and Birtell followed with back-to-back RBI singles.

Amber Arbenber had two hits for Sharon Springs, which beat Roxbury, 17-2, in the consolation game.

Milford is at Worcester today.
