Patriots' boys win invitational

Staff Report

Athlete of the meet Brian Sutton helped Cherry Valley-Springfield to the boys team title at the nine-team CV-S Invitational on Saturday.

Sutton won the 200-meter run in 23.8 seconds, which tied a meet record. He also won the 400 (53.0) and ran the second legs for the victorious 800 and 1,600 relay teams. Weston Johnson, Sutton, Scott VanDerkrake and Rob Schafsteck competed in both relays, setting meet records of 1:35.8 and 3:38.3, respectively. Their 800 relay finish also marked a school record.

CV-S, which scored 151 points to beat second-place Maine-Endwell by 17, also received victories from Jason Guernsey (3,000 steeplechase, 10:52.7) and Schafsteck (triple jump, 39 feet, 7.25 inches).

Schenevus/Worcester finished last with 14 points.

Addy Schneider paced the Patriots' girls to a fourth-place finish with 113 points. She won the long jump (14-0) and the triple jump (33-0). A co-field performer of the meet with Berne Knox's Faith Carney, Schneider also ran the opening leg on the winning 800 relay team. Ksenia Hanlon, Joslyn Mabie and Maggie Millner followed for a first-place time of 1:57.7.

Teammate Laura Kroon won the high jump (5-0) for CV-S, which hosts Gilbertsville-Mount Upton and Andes on Tuesday.

Berne Knox won the girls title with 165 points. Maine-Endwell placed second with 119.5, four ahead of third-place Port Richmond. Schenevus/Worcester finished seventh with 24 points.

S-E Invitational

Oneonta's boys edged Cooperstown, 108-105, for the title at the 14-team Sherburne-Earlville Invitational on Friday.

Brendan Pidgeon won the 100 (11.4) and teammate Marcel Sanchez placed first in the 400 (53.8) for OHS, which also took the 400 and 1,600 relays.

Dan Dokuchitz, Sanchez and Pidgeon ran the last three legs, respectively, of each relay. Doug DiMartin led off the 800, which won in 45.9, and Pat Jefferies ran the opening leg of the 1,600, which crossed in 3:39.1.

Unatego's Anthony Eardley earned outstanding field athlete of the meet after winning the long jump (20-5.75) and the triple jump (40-4.75). He also placed first in the 110 hurdles (16.1).

Other local boys winners were Cooperstown's Ryan Huggins (400 hurdles, 59.9) and Terrell Silvera (133-6.25) and Walton's Chris Donnelly (800, 2:06.5) and Adam Finch (shot put, 44-11).

Huggins also ran the second leg for the Redskins' winning 3,200 relay team (8:44.5), which featured Will Dykstra, Will Reis and Peter Edmonds.

Ashley Mahlmeister, the outstanding track athlete of the meet for girls, led Sidney to a team title with 109 points _ seven ahead of second-place New Hartford.

Mahlmeister won the 100 hurdles (15.5), the long jump (16-2.25) and the triple jump (34-6.75).

She also ran the first leg of the 400 relay, which featured Kim Young, Jessica Fusco and Lyndsay Delello and won in 52.2.

Unatego's Katya Harris was the other multiple-winner among locals, placing first in the 400 (59.7) and the 800 (2:30.8).

Walton's Molly Maguire (1,500, 5:14); Cooperstown's Anna Weber (400 hurdles, 1:07.5); Sidney's Danielle Martindale (high jump, 4-10); and Oneonta's Val Ridgway (shot put, 31-7) also earned titles.

The OHS 1,600 relay team of Jami Bellinger, Lauren Payne, Jenn Havens and Ann Ward crossed in 4:19.2 for a victory as well.
