Dragons fall short at ECACs

Staff Report

Oneonta State baseball went 1-2 at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Upstate New York Tournament, which ran Saturday and Sunday at Red Dragon Field.

The Red Dragons (25-18) dropped their opener, 4-3, to SUNY Athletic Conference rival Brockport on Saturday before eliminating top-seeded Rochester Institute of Technology, 14-6. The second-seeded Red Dragons dropped out of the tournament with an 11-3 loss to Brockport on Sunday.

Oswego (18-12), which entered the tournament as the fifth seed, won the title Sunday with a 12-9 victory over Brockport in the second championship game. Brockport (26-19) handed Oswego its first ECAC tournament loss Sunday, when the Golden Eagles won the first championship game, 11-3.

Edmeston graduate Sam Ackerman allowed three runs (two earned), struck out 11 and walked three in a five-hitter, but the Red Dragons lost Sunday's opener as Brockport eliminated O-State for the second straight tournament. The Golden Eagles also bumped Oneonta out of the SUNYAC Tournament with a 10-7 win in a May 3 elimination game.

Winning pitcher Kris Gentzke allowed one run on nine hits, struck out 15 and walked two for the Golden Eagles, who snapped a 1-all tie in the top of the third inning on an RBI single from Rob Maxwell.

Dan Randall went 3-for-3 for the Red Dragons, who also received hits from Chris Brady and Anthony Suhadolnik.

Ryan Cole (5-2) pitched seven innings in relief of starter Dave Filak to earn the victory against RIT. Cole allowed one run on four hits, struck out four and walked one. The Tigers scored five runs on four hits against Filak, who lasted two innings.

The Red Dragons erased a 5-2 deficit on five hits in a six-run fourth. Cherry Valley-Springfield graduate Scott Dubben, who led off the fourth with a single, finished 4-for-6.

Ryan Myers went 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs for the Red Dragons, who got three hits and five RBIs from Nick Martino and three hits, four runs and two RBIs from Brian Holmes. Jon Bedosky and Brady contributed two hits apiece.

Walton graduate Matt George went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for RIT.

Joe LaDuca scored on an error by O-State left fielder Nick Martino in the fourth inning to give Brockport a 4-3 lead in the tournament opener Saturday. Martino had two hits to lead the Red Dragons.
