NYC Qualifying Challenge

Senior Alex Grout, sophomore Fred Romer and junior Marty Nicholson broke Oneonta State school records Saturday at the New York City Qualifying Challenge.

Grout ran an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 3 minutes, 55.13 seconds in the 1,500 meters to break the school record of 3:56.08 he set May 2 at Princeton. Grout finished 11th.

Romer also lowered his school record in the 800. He crossed in 1:53.93, breaking the mark of 1:55.11 he set two weeks ago at the SUNY Athletic Conference meet. Romer, who placed 11th, qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference meet.

Nicholson's time of 15:37.53 in the 5,000 broke the Ryan Walter's school record of 15:41.99 set two years ago. He placed 16th.

The Red Dragons' 1,600 relay team of junior Joe Reed, Romer, freshman Joe Reyes and Eric Theiss ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:15.80 and placed second. O-State is ranked 13th nationally in the 1,600 relay.

On the women's side, O-State's 1,600 relay team of freshman Liz Maziejka, sophomore Kristen Stein, freshman Connie Belkevich and junior Janine Sacca crossed first in an ECAC qualifying time of 4:00.14.

Belkevich and Stein finished ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 400. Belkevich crossed 1:00.26 and Stein in 1:00.56 as both qualified for the ECAC meet.

Other ECAC qualifiers were sophomore Amberlyn Mattice, who placed 12th in the 800 (2:20.45), and freshman Celia Alterio, who placed third in the 3,000 steeplechase (11:57.86).
