Stamford boys win Harbaugh

Stamford senior Justin Harmon set a meet record in the 400 meters Wednesday, helping the Indians to their first boys team title in Harbaugh Invitational history.

"In my 25 years of coaching, this is probably the biggest win I've had," said Stamford coach Greg O'Connell, whose team amassed 82 points, two better than runner-up Harpursville and four ahead of third-place Laurens, during the 16th annual event at Delhi. "This is the closest finish we've ever had."

Harmon won the 400 in 51.50 seconds. He also placed second in the 200 (23.8) and third in the long jump (19 feet, 1 3/4 inches).

Laurens' Tom Benner and Harpursville's Mike DeMarco shared MVP honors. Benner won the 1,600 (4:43.2) and the 3,200 (10:48.1). DeMarco placed first in the 100 (11.1).

Unatego's Anthony Eardley also had a big meet, setting a meet record in the long jump (20-4 1/2) and placing first in the triple jump (40-6 3/4).

Brandon Butts of Davenport/South Kortright cleared 6-0 to win the high jump. Marty Cole of Delhi won the shot put (46-11 1/2), and Walton's Adam Finch won the discus (136-8).

Delhi's girls cruised to the team title, amassing 144 1/2 points. Laurens placed second with 74.

Bulldogs junior Katie Darling set meet records in the 100 hurdles (15.7) and the 400 hurdles (1:07.3). She also won the high jump (4-11).

Darling shared MVP honors with Unatego's Katya Harris and Laurens' Sarah Bilz.

Harris won the 400 in a meet-record 1:00.54 and also took first in the 800 (2:28.0) and the long jump (15-10).

Bilz placed first in the 100, crossing in a meet-record time of 13.1. She also won the 200 in 28.0.

at Bainbridge-Guilford

Dustin Ross won two events to lead Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton to a Midstate Athletic Conference win over Greene, Sidney and Oxford.

Ross finished first in the 100 (11.5 seconds) and in the 200 (22.8) for the Bears, who finished with 92 points. He also ran on the winning 400 relay team.

Chad Noelle won the 1,600 (4:55) and the 3,200 (10:33.9) for Greene, which finished with 73 points to tie Sidney for second. Last-place Oxford scored 18 points.

Troy Kiel led Sidney with wins in the long jump (18 feet, 11 1/2 inches) and triple jump (37-11).

B-G/A's girls won with 76 points, 15 better than Greene. Sidney had 60 and Oxford finished with 37.

Bethany Norris led the Bears with wins in the 100 (13.1) and the 200 (27.3).

Ashley Mahlmeister won the 100 hurdles (16.3) and the triple jump (35-9) for Sidney.

B-G/A's boys will compete in the Parkhurst Invitational at Union-Endicott on Saturday, a day after its girls are at the Rotary Invitational at Maine-Endwell.

at Sauquoit Valley

Alec Silvera had two first-place finishes, one second and one third for Cooperstown in a 75-67 Center State Conference loss to Sauquoit Valley.

Silvera won the 110 hurdles (16.2) and the triple jump (38-2). He finished second in the high jump (5-6) and third in the 200 (24.7).

Ryan Huggins contributed second-place finishes in the 400 hurdles (59.5) and the long jump (18-4) for the Redskins, who will compete in the CSC Championships on May 22 at Sauquoit Valley.

On the girls side, Laura Resnick and Anna Weber each won two events, but Cooperstown lost, 108.5-32.5.

Resnick won the 1,500 in a season-best time of 5:20.7 and the triple jump with a season-best distance of 31-3 1/2. Resnick also had a season-best in the long jump, placing second at 15-2.

Weber won the 100 hurdles (16.7) and the 400 hurdles (1:07.1), the latter a season-best time for her.

Cooperstown will compete in the Morrisville Invitational on Saturday.
