'Dogs stun Jackets

Devon Bedient and Zach Newkerk combined on a four-hitter, and Luke Burns went 3-for-3 in Delhi's 6-2 non-league baseball victory at Oneonta High on Thursday.

"Bedient pitched a strong game and they deserved to win," said OHS coach Joe Hughes, whose team is ranked 16th among Class A teams in the state. "They pitched, hit and fielded it better. They were better in every phase. We had a tough day."

Bedient held the Yellowjackets to two runs over six innings. Newkerk pitched a scoreless seventh.

"He mixed his pitches well," Hughes said of Bedient, who struck out five and walked four. "He had a curveball and kept us out in front. He preyed on our hitters. We were not disciplined, we did not stay back and tried to do too much. We had some bad at-bats, but you have to give him credit."

The first of Burns' two doubles came during a two-run third inning that ended with the Bulldogs (9-9) ahead, 4-0.

Dalton Smith's RBI single in the fifth helped the Yellowjackets pull to 4-2. Smith had two of Oneonta's four hits. Burns' RBI single in the seventh capped the scoring.

The Yellowjackets (14-4) play Seton Catholic Central on Monday at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton.

Jordan Williams had seven strikeouts and three walks in a six-hitter, and visiting Edmeston took advantage of 10 Cherry Valley-Springfield errors for a Tri-Valley League win.

"If we could have fielded the ball, it would have been a good game," CV-S coach Ed Dubben said.

CV-S made nine errors over the last two innings, helping Edmeston score 11 runs.

"We've got some guys playing out of position and we have some young guys," Dubben said of his team's problems in the field. "We're not going to make any excuses, we need to field the ball. That's been our downfall."

CV-S has won the last two T-V crossover championships, both against West Division champion Edmeston, which has won six straight division titles. The Patriots need a victory at Worcester on Monday to win their fifth straight East Division title.

CV-S and Worcester are tied atop of the East Division with 5-3 records. Monday's winner will advance to the crossover at 5 p.m. May 23 against Edmeston. Oneonta State will host the T-V final.

Nick Davoulas went 4-for-5, and Matt Laymon and Anthony Wolcott each had two hits for the Panthers.

Mike Fassett and Sam Dubben had two hits apiece for CV-S (8-6), which hosts Cooperstown on Saturday.

Joe Gardner capped an eight-run first inning for Worcester with a grand slam, helping the host Wolverines cruise to a Tri-Valley League win.

Gardner homered to left field with none out in the first for Worcester, which received a two-run homer to left from Ryan Sklenka with one out in the third for an 11-0 lead. Winning pitcher Joey Nelson (4-1) contributed an inside-the-park homer to center field in the sixth for the final margin.

Sklenka finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs and Nelson went 2-for-3 with three runs. Nelson also combined on a one-hitter with Jason McHargue and Devan Dobson. Shawn Sperbeck singled to shallow right field off Nelson with two out in the fourth for Schenevus' hit.

Worcester (9-4, 5-3) visits Jefferson today for a non-leaguer, then hosts Cherry Valley-Springfield (8-6, 5-3) on Monday in a T-V regular-season finale.

Jordan Gross went 3-for-4 with a homer and five RBIs to lead West Canada Valley's non-league road victory. Gross' three-run homer in the fourth inning gave West Canada an 8-1 lead.

Cooperstown rallied for four runs in the sixth. Quinn Snyder (2-for-4) had a two-run single in the inning. The Redskins (13-4), who took a nine-game winning streak into Thursday's game, left a runner on base in the sixth and stranded two in the seventh.

Philip Pohl doubled for the Redskins, giving him 101 hits over four varsity seasons. Pohl is second on Cooperstown's all-time hit list behind former teammate Frank Petroskey, who graduated last season with 113.

Tyler Wildfeir threw a four-hitter and hit an RBI double in the third inning of Gilbertsville-Mount Upton's non-league home victory.

Raiders coach Jim Johnson said Wildfeir's ground-rule double to right-center in the third that gave G-MU a 3-0 lead would have been home run if there was a fence. He said the ball rolled into the parking lot, which is about 420 feet away.

Andrew Delmar had two doubles, the second leading off G-MU's three-run sixth. Pinch-hitter Tyler Fuller also hit a two-run single in that inning, which ended with the Raiders (10-5) ahead, 7-3.
