OHS doubles team reaches semis

Staff Report

Oneonta High's top two singles players made for an unbeatable doubles combination on the opening day of the Section Four Class B Tennis Tournament at Owego.

Top-seeded Riley Lorenz and Jess McCue won two matches Thursday to advance to today's semifinal round against Owego's Reid Jones and Zack Mandeville, who are seeded fourth. The two-day, single-elimination tournament resumes at 3 p.m. today back at Owego.

Lorenz and McCue, who normally play first and second singles, respectively, opened with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Elmira Free Academy's Dominic Parflanowicz and Jacob Parflanowicz. The Yellowjackets' duo followed with a 6-3, 6-2 sweep of Susquehanna Valley's Steve Wagner and Joe Krebbeks. The EFA and SV doubles teams that lost to Lorenz and McCue were not among the top six tournament seeds.

Oneonta's other doubles team, Josh Moss and Alex Levenstein, finished 1-1. They started with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Maine-Endwell's Nate Szczepanski and Brian Hansen, then dropped a three-set match to Johnson City's Shayne Blaha and Steve Edmunds, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-2.

Singles player Luke Mancuso also went 1-1, following a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Chenango Valley's Nick Ruffo with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to EFA's Mike Krueger.

Jacob Joseph of OHS also competed in singles play but lost his first match. Windsor's Tyler Shimkus rallied from a 6-2 loss in the opening set by winning the last two, 6-4, 6-1.

OHS coach Phyllis Orlowski said team scoring was not available.

Section Four Class C-D

Top-seeded Sidney senior Michael Butcher advanced to the Section Four Class C-D singles semifinals at SUNY Delhi.

Butcher won two matches Thursday, including a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Hunter-Tannersville's Zach Clark in the quarterfinals. Butcher will play Greene's Craig Hebbard at 4 p.m. today at either Bainbridge-Guilford or SUNY Delhi. The match will be outside at B-G if weather allows it. If not, they'll play inside at SUNY Delhi.

Their semifinal match had to be moved to today because the unseeded Hebbard won three matches Thursday, and rules prohibit players from playing four matches in a day. Hebbard defeated Margaretville's Andersen Morse, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, in his quarterfinal.

Also advancing in singles was second-seeded Hancock's Paul Hartz, who knocked off Alex Porter of Windham, 6-4, 6-0, in a semifinal.

The top two singles players and top two doubles teams advanced to play at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Binghamton Tennis Center against qualifiers from the western side of Section Four.

The winners of Tuesday's matches advance to the Section Four State Qualifiers, which run May 23-24 at the Binghamton Tennis Center. The top three singles and doubles teams from the state qualifier advance to the state meet.

In doubles, Sidney's top-seeded team of Alex Wheeler and Frank Vanca lost its semifinal match to third-seeded Patrick Loughlin and Kevin Kenderes of Seton Catholic Central, 7-5, 6-2.

Delhi's second-seeded team of Jon Li and Josh Orr defeated Sidney's fourth-seeded duo of Victor Garcia-Garcia and Rob Loibl, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 ,in a semifinal.
