May 21, 2008 04:00 am Sidney's Michael Butcher placed third at the Section Four Class C-D Tournament at the Binghamton Tennis Center on Tuesday and will play today for a spot in the state qualifier. Butcher will meet the third-place finisher from the Class B sectional meet in a challenge match at 3:30 p.m. today back at the BTC. Butcher lost his first match of the season in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-1, to Trumansburg's Jay Bartishevich. He fell, 6-0, 6-2, to Elmira Notre Dame's Dan Freeman in the final. "He was just better than Michael," said Sidney coach Loraine Flyzik, Butcher's mother. "Michael played a good match, but the boy was left-handed and that's a problem for us. ... It's the opposite of what you're used to." Butcher (13-1) then beat Hancock's Paul Hartz, 6-2, 6-2, in the consolation match. The two met earlier this season, with Butcher winning in three sets. "Michael was very consistent and made very few mistakes," Flyzik said. "I think he knew if he didn't win that match, his senior year was done. We talked about that even prior to the first match. He had to get one of them or he was done." Sidney finished second as a team with 41 points. Elmira Notre Dame won with 65. Delhi tied Seton Catholic for fifth with 27 apiece. Delhi's Jon Li and Josh Orr fell, 6-1, 6-1, to Jon LeSeur and Matt Sirianni of Elmira Notre Dame in a doubles semifinal.
