O-Tigers shut out Spinners

Staff Report

Oneonta took advantage of five errors and earned a 3-0 New York-Penn League road victory over the Lowell Spinners on Wednesday.

The O-Tigers (3-1) took two of three from the defending Stedler Division champions. It's also the second shutout in four games for Oneonta.

The Tigers have given up three runs this year.

The O-Tigers scored the go-ahead run in the third when Jim Gulliver scored on a groundout by Jamie Johnson.

Oneonta visits Vermont (2-4) at 7:05 tonight to open a three-game series with the Lock Monsters. The Tigers then return home for a three-game set with Lowell, beginning at 6:05 p.m. Sunday.

Four Oneonta pitchers combined on the shutout, scattering three hits.

Adam Wilk made his first start, throwing three innings. He struck out three. Cory Hamilton, who earned the victory, went two innings. He struck out one.

Wade Kapteyn followed with two innings and Mike LaLuna pitched the final two innings to earn his second save. LaLuna struck out the side in the ninth.

The O-Tigers struggled at the plate Wednesday, going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and leaving nine men on base.

For the series, Oneonta went 5-for-29 with runners in scoring position and left 25 on base.

Gulliver led off the third when he reached on a fielding error by second baseman Derrik Gibson. After stealing second base, Gulliver went to third on a throwing error by catcher Sean Killeen.

Johnson then grounded out to second, scoring Gulliver for a 1-0 lead.

Rawley Bishop started the sixth with an infield single to third and went to second on a throwing error by Michael Almanzar.

After Michael Rockett and John Murrian each walked to load the bases, Chris Sedon struck out swinging. Gulliver then flied out to center to score Bishop to make it 2-0.

Oneonta closed the scoring in the eighth. Bishop reached second on an error when right fielder Wilfredo Pichardo dropped a flyball.

Rockett then sacrifice bunted, but Almanzar had a throwing error to allow Bishop to score to make it 3-0.

NOTE: Right-handed pitcher Nick Cassavechia, who was 1-0 in one game with Oneonta this season, was promoted to Single-A West Michigan on Wednesday. Cassavechia pitched three innings in relief Monday, giving up four hits as the Tigers beat Lowell, 4-1, in 12 innings.
