Former O-State runner honored

Recent Oneonta State graduate Alex Grout received second-team honors on ESPN the Magazine's 2008 Academic All-American Team for Cross Country and Track and Field, the college announced Tuesday.

Grout became eligible for the national honor after earning first-team accolades in District 1.

Grout won the SUNY Athletic Conference's Chancellor's Award in cross country and was named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic squad this past academic year. A Chi Alpha Sigma inductee, Grout also made the SUNYAC All-Academic Team and Commissioner's List.

Athletically, Grout received All-SUNYAC, All-Eastern College Athletic Conference and All-Region honors in cross country this past season, when he set the school record of 25 minutes, 29 seconds in the 8,000-meter run at regionals. Grout also earned All-Conference and All-American honors during the indoor track season this past winter and made All-Conference for outdoor track after finishing second in the 1,500 during the SUNYAC championship meet.

Grout is the ninth O-State athlete to receive Academic All-American honors. He is the fourth O-State male athlete to earn national honors and the first since 2006.

Two women ace No. 10 at OCC

Two area women aced the par-3 10th hole at the Oneonta Country Club earlier this month.

Marcia Foote used a 7-wood for her hole-in-one on June 3. Joan Martin, Liz Gilbert and Julie DeLaurentiis witnessed her shot.

Two days later, Carol Fuller sank her tee shot on the 10th hole. Her husband, Don Fuller, witnessed the shot.

Bass winners come up big

The Susquehanna Bass Association hosted the Kirn's Body Shop Bass Tournament on June 22 on Canadarago Lake. The event marked the SBA's first of 12 tournaments this season.

First place went to Bruce Hall and Anthony Konchar with a five-fish limit weighing 18.53 pounds. Tom Trelease and Dave Frederick finished second (five fish, 17.70 pounds); Bob Gray and Don Hoag placed third (five, 15.57); and Jim Dillenbeck and Vic VanSteenburg were fourth (14.18).

Hall caught the lunker of the tournament, a 20-inch largemouth bass weighing 5.08 pounds. Gray caught the biggest smallmouth, at 19 inches long and 3.93 pounds.

Product display in Delhi on Thursday

Clark Companies and Sportsfield Specialties will host their first barbecue and product display for PlayersGoal Sports Equipment from 2-5 p.m. Thursday at 41155 State Highway 10 in Delhi.

The event is designed for high school and college athletic directors and coaches in the counties of Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego and Schoharie who may be interested in purchasing sports products from PlayersGoal.

The companies also will host a guided tour of its manufacturing facility in Delhi. Those who attend will be eligible to register their schools in a raffle for the chance to win a set of soccer goals. For more information, visit the website www.PlayersGoal.com.

Baseball Hall to host author

At 1:30 p.m. Thursday, the National Baseball Hall of Fame will host author Al Santasiere for a discussion of his new book, Yankee Stadium: The Official Retrospective. Following his program, Santasiere will be available to sign copies of his book in the Library Atrium.

At 1 p.m. Friday, former major leaguer Nate Colbert will speak in the Bullpen Theater. Colbert, who played for the Astros, Padres, Tigers, Expos and A's, hit five home runs in one day in 1972.

Golf tourney Friday at Delhi

The second annual Victoria Brodeur Golf Tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Friday at the Delhi College Golf Course.

Cost is $100 per person. Those who register as individuals will be placed on a four-person team for the captain-and-crew event. The field is limited to 32 foursomes.

A breakfast buffet is set for 8:30 a.m. Friday, followed by registration at 9:30 a.m., the tournament at 10 a.m. and the awards dinner at 3 p.m. Non-golfers can be part of the breakfast and dinner for $20.

All proceeds will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International.

Blood drive Saturday at Baseball Hall

The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and Bassett Healthcare will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday in the Hall's Education Gallery.

Greenberg tribute starts Saturday

The National Baseball Hall of Fame will pay tribute to Hank Greenberg in a special event presented by the American Jewish Historical Society this week.

The celebration begins at 5 p.m. Saturday in the Bullpen Theater with a screening of Aviva Kempner's film The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg. Following the film, Kempner will participate in question-and-answer session with the audience.

A Tribute to Hank Greenberg panel discussion featuring Kempner, journalist Ira Berkow, historian Bill Simons and Greenberg's daughter Alva will begin at 9:10 a.m. Sunday in the Grandstand Theater. This event is free but requires a ticket (call the membership department at 607-547-0397 to reserve a ticket).

A book signing in the Library Atrium will run from 12:15-12:45 p.m. Sunday. The day concludes with a second showing of The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg at 1:30 p.m. in the Bullpen Theater, followed by another session with Kempner. Golf tourney to run July 26

The Stamford Women's Golf Association will host its fourth annual Queen of the Catskills Golf Tournament on July 26.

The event, which again will feature hole-in-one prizes, opens with registration at 8 a.m. A continental breakfast will follow, and a luncheon will be held in the clubhouse after the tournament.

Cost is $55 per player and includes greens fees, cart fees, a practice round, breakfast, snacks and lunch. Entries must be received by July 17 and are limited to the first 72 players.

Soccer Hall sets Induction Weekend

The National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta announced the schedule for its 2008 Induction Weekend, which will run Aug. 1-3 at the Wright National Campus.

The weekend will feature the inductions of 18-time NCAA Division I women's soccer championship coach Anson Dorrance and former U.S. Men's National Team player Hugo Perez at noon Aug. 3.

The weekend begins with a memorial service and Hall of Fame Kick-Off Social on Aug. 1. The annual Hall of Fame Golf Tournament will follow Aug. 2 at the Oneonta Country Club. Also Aug. 2, the Hall will host an American Youth Soccer Organization tournament, followed by the President's Reception and Hall of Fame Banquet on that night inside the museum.

After the dinner, the Big 3 Enshrinement Ceremony will recognize the newest Hall of Famers from the AYSO, the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in the Museum Atrium.
