Boy qualifies for motocross nationals
Mount Upton resident Ryan Zaveral, 15, will compete in the Air Nautiques/AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn's Ranch for the third straight year, his father, Bob Zaveral, announced Friday.
Ryan, a student at Unatego, earned one of 1,386 qualifying spots out of a pool of roughly 20,000 hopefuls from across the country. The top finishers in area and regional qualifiers earn berths to the national championship, which is slated for July 28-Aug. 2 at Hurricane Mills, Tenn.
Ryan has been riding since age 10 and has won more than 100 races during the last five years.
Three women beat OCC pro
Three women from the Oneonta Country Club's Women's Golf Association finished with net scores better than club pro Jeremy Kerr on Thursday, which marked the OCC's annual Beat the Pro Day.
Kerr closed with a 74 on the par-72 layout, two strokes behind the top handicap-aided score of Gail Hess. Heidi Hofbauer Buzzy and Andrea Strom also beat Kerr with 73s.
Buzzy was the Babe Diedrickson Zaharias low gross winner at 87. Jeanne Hobkirk earned the low nine-hole gross at 53.
Blood drive Saturday at Baseball Hall
The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and Bassett Healthcare will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday in the Hall's Education Gallery.
Blood donors will receive free admission to the Hall on Saturday. Hall members who donate will receive a hat.

Greenberg tribute starts Saturday
The National Baseball Hall of Fame will pay tribute to Hank Greenberg in a special event presented by the American Jewish Historical Society this week.
The celebration begins at 5 p.m. Saturday in the Bullpen Theater with a screening of Aviva Kempner's film The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg. Following the film, Kempner will participate in question-and-answer session with the audience.
A Tribute to Hank Greenberg panel discussion featuring Kempner, journalist and Ira Berkow, historian Bill Simons and Greenberg's daughter Alva will begin at 9:10 a.m. Sunday in the Grandstand Theater. A book signing in the Library Atrium will run from 12:15-12:45 p.m. Sunday. The day concludes with a second showing of The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg at 1:30 p.m. in the Bullpen Theater, followed by another session with Kempner.

The Susquehanna Bass Association will continue its 21st season Sunday with The Gruver, Zweifel, Scott Tournament on Delta Lake. The event runs from 6 a.m.-2 p.m.

Horse-riding program starts Monday
Khala-Marr Stables in Otego will hold a six-week summer program for youths ages 6-14 from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays from this Monday-Aug. 8. Early drop offs begin at 7:30 a.m. and late pickups end at 5 p.m. daily.
The horse-riding program is for beginner to intermediate riders, who each will be assigned a horse. The program features horsemanship classes, riding classes, horse-related crafts, barn activities, hiking, water games, storytelling and horse movies.

Soccer camps begin Monday
The Headwaters Soccer Club will celebrate its 19th anniversary with its annual summer camp series, which starts Monday at Otego Elementary.
Cost is $60 per camper and includes a T-shirt and a water bottle. All camps run from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays and are for boys and girls ages 7-17. Enrollment is limited to 125 campers per session.
The first session is the Time Warner Cable-Volkswagen of Oneonta Camp, which runs Monday-July 4 at Otego Elementary. Other sessions are as follows:

Summer basketball camps set
SUNY Cobleskill will hold its Fighting Tiger Basketball Camp program under the direction of athletic director and men's basketball coach Kevin McCarthy this summer.
The Tiger "Buddies" Camp, for youths ages 6-10, runs weekdays from 9 a.m.-noon this Monday-July 11, excluding the Fourth of July. Cost is $110 per pre-registered child.
The program continues with the five-day Boys Day Camp (ages 9-16), which runs from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. July 14-17 and from 8:30-11:30 a.m. July 18. Cost is $140 per pre-registered camper.
The five-day Girls Day Camp (ages 9-17), which also costs $140 per pre-registered camper, runs from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. July 28-31 and from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Aug. 1.

SUNY Delhi swimming set
SUNY Delhi will host summer swimming programs for youths and adults beginning Monday.
Community swimming lessons will run between 9 a.m.-noon in the Kunsela Hall pool. Classes include American Red Cross Levels I-VI, Basic Water Rescue, infant/toddler/preschoolers program and a Level VI diving class. Swim team practice is also available.

The seventh annual Bronco Track Club Summer Track & Field Meet will start at 6 p.m. July 8 at SUNY Delhi.
The event, co-hosted by The Delsego Roadrunners, is free for Delhi Summer Track Camp participants and Delhi Track Alumni. A donation of $2 is recommended for other participants.

The Oneonta State women's basketball team will host individual and team camps for girls basketball players in July.
The Girls Individual Development Basketball Camp, for overnight and commuter campers ages 10-18, runs July 20-24. The O-State women's basketball team will serve as counselors for the camp, which is designed to develop fundamentals.
Resident cost is $375 and commuter cost is $300. Registrations made after July 5 require payment in full at the time of registration.
O-State will hold its Red Dragon Team Camp from July 11-13. Cost is $200 per team, $175 per resident and $25 per commuter for the camp, which features competitive games for junior varsity and varsity programs at O-State's Alumni Fieldhouse.

Track meets continue July 15
Oneonta State and Hurley's Heroes Track Club of Oneonta will continue its series of Twilight Track & Field Meets at 7 p.m. July 15 and Aug. 12.
The meets will feature competition in the 50-meter dash, the 800, the mile and the 3,000 for athletes ages 14 and older, as well as the 100, 200 and 400 for all ages. A high jump competition for ages 14 and older also will take place if facilities are available.
There is no cost to participate. Athletes should be properly dressed to compete.
Sidney volleyball tourney set
The Sidney Central Schools Alumni Association will host its first Warrior 4-ev4r Sand Volleyball Tournament on July 19 during its annual alumni weekend.
Proceeds from the tournament will go toward refurbishing the sand volleyball courts and to help establish a bank fund for scholarships toward college and summer camps for Sidney girls.

Basketball tourney set for July 19
The 17th annual Morris Booster Club 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament starts at 9 a.m. July 19 at Morris Central.
Teams are allowed a maximum of five players each for the double-elimination tournament, which has a rain date of July 20.
Cost is $5 per player in the elementary division (grades 3-4 and 5-6); $10 per player in the high school division (boys junior high, junior varsity and grades 11-12 varsity; girls modified or JV and high school); and $15 per player in the open division (all ages and 30-and-older).

Soccer Hall sets Induction Weekend
The National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta announced the schedule for its 2008 Induction Weekend, which will run Aug. 1-3 at the Wright National Campus.
The weekend will feature the inductions of 18-time NCAA Division I women's soccer championship coach Anson Dorrance and former U.S. Men's National Team player Hugo Perez at noon Aug. 3.
The weekend begins with a memorial service and Hall of Fame Kick-Off Social on Aug. 1. The annual Hall of Fame Golf Tournament will follow Aug. 2 at the Oneonta Country Club. Also Aug. 2, the Hall will host an American Youth Soccer Organization tournament, followed by the President's Reception and Hall of Fame Banquet on that night inside the museum.
After the dinner, the Big 3 Enshrinement Ceremony will recognize the newest Hall of Famers from the AYSO, the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in the Museum Atrium.
A luncheon will follow the 2008 Induction Ceremony on Aug. 3.
