{"HeadlineLight14"/}Velan hired as college soccer assistant

Oneonta State and Stamford Central graduate Mary Velan will serve the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team as a full-time assistant coach during the 2008-09 academic year, the college announced Monday.

Velan, a four-time All-American for the Red Dragons, graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in psychology. She finished her four seasons at O-State as the program leader in all-time goals (71), assists (27) and points (169).

The SUNY Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year in 2004, Velan has played for the Women's Premier Soccer League's Adirondack Lynx under coach P.J. Moffit since 2006. Velan also received SUNYAC Player of the Year honors in 2006 and 2007. She will work at the Hoboken, N.J., college under women's soccer head coach Jeff Parker.

Velan served the Oneonta area as an assistant girls program director at the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club and was a regular coach/instructor for the Headwaters Soccer Club. The Daily Star selected Velan its Player of the Year for high school girls soccer in 2002.

Tom Berg and Monte Westcott won the Susquehanna Bass Association's Gruver, Zweifel and Scott Tournament on June 29 at Delta Lake.

The two finished with a five-fish limit weighing 18.11 pounds. Berg caught the lunker of the tournament, a largemouth bass weighing 4.82 pounds and measuring 20 3/4 inches long. Westcott caught the big smallmouth, at 18 1/4 inches and 3.49 pounds.

Bruce Hall and Lou Blasetti Sr. placed second (five fish, 11.92 pounds); Frank Microni and Steve Llewellyn finished third (five, 11.06), and Mike Murphy and Brad Dick rounded out the top four (five, 10.31).

The seventh annual Bronco Track Club Summer Track & Field Meet will start at 6 p.m. today at SUNY Delhi.

The event, co-hosted by The Delsego Roadrunners, is free for Delhi Summer Track Camp participants and Delhi Track Alumni. A donation of $2 is recommended for other participants.

Registration will take place before the meet. All athletes must sign waivers to compete. Parents must sign waivers for those younger than age 18.

The meet will feature the following events: 100 meters (12-and-under and open); 400; 800; mile; 3,000; 400 hurdles; 1,600 relay; shot put; long jump; triple jump; javelin (college and open only).

Windham Mountain is seeking volunteers for the East Coast National Mountain Bike Challenge, which it will host from July 10-13.

Volunteers help with registration, parking and judging, and also serve as course marshals. Those who volunteer will receive Windham Mountain Lift Tickets, T-shirts, free parking and an end-of-contest party.

The 43rd annual Delaware County Men's Amateur Golf Tournament runs Friday-July 13 at the par-72 Delhi College Golf Course.

The tournament will feature a championship division and five handicap flights.

The Oneonta Elks Club 1312 will host its annual Gallagher Golf Tournament at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Oneonta Country Club. The captain-and-crew event, which is open to the public, features four-person teams and has a shotgun start.

Cost is $30 for those who are members of the Elks Club and the OCC; $35 for OCC-only members; $50 for Elks Club-only members; and $55 for those who are not members of either organization. Cost includes greens fees, cart, a post-tournament chicken barbecue dinner at the Elks Club and prizes.

All proceeds will benefit the Elks National Foundation Scholarship Program.

The Headwaters Soccer Club will continue its annual summer camp series with Session III's Middleburgh Telephone Company Camp, which runs July 14-18 at Mine Kill State Park in North Blenheim.

Cost is $60 per camper and includes a T-shirt and a water bottle. All camps run from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays and are for boys and girls ages 7-17. Enrollment is limited to 125 campers per session.

Session V: July 28-Aug. 1, New York Central Mutual-Wightman Specialty Woods Camp at Edmeston Central.

SUNY Cobleskill will hold continue Fighting Tiger Basketball Camp program under the direction of athletic director and men's basketball coach Kevin McCarthy with the five-day Boys Day Camp.

Designed for boys ages 9-16, the camp runs from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. July 14-17 and from 8:30-11:30 a.m. July 18. Cost is $140 per pre-registered camper.

The five-day Girls Day Camp (ages 9-17), which also costs $140 per pre-registered camper, runs from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. July 28-31 and from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Aug. 1.

Registration on the first day of each camp will cost an additional $10.

Oneonta State and Hurley's Heroes Track Club of Oneonta will continue its series of Twilight Track & Field Meets at 7 p.m. July 15 and Aug. 12.

The meets will feature competition in the 50-meter dash, the 800, the mile and the 3,000 for athletes ages 14 and older, as well as the 100, 200 and 400 for all ages. A high jump competition for ages 14 and older also will take place if facilities are available.

There is no cost to participate. Athletes should be properly dressed to compete.

The Sidney Central Schools Alumni Association will host its first Warrior 4-ev4r Sand Volleyball Tournament on July 19 during its annual alumni weekend.

Proceeds from the tournament will go toward refurbishing the sand volleyball courts and to help establish a bank fund for scholarships toward college and summer camps for Sidney girls.

The 17th annual Morris Booster Club 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament starts at 9 a.m. July 19 at Morris Central.

Teams are allowed a maximum of five players each for the double-elimination tournament, which has a rain date of July 20.

Cost is $5 per player in the elementary division (grades 3-4 and 5-6); $10 per player in the high school division (boys junior high, junior varsity and grades 11-12 varsity; girls modified or JV and high school); and $15 per player in the open division (all ages and 30-and-older).

A dunk contest and a three-point shootout is scheduled for noon July 19. Teams can pre-register or register on the day of the event. Entries should be sent to P.O. Box 426, Morris, NY 13808.

The National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta announced the schedule for its 2008 Induction Weekend, which will run Aug. 1-3 at the Wright National Campus.

The weekend will feature the inductions of 18-time NCAA Division I women's soccer championship coach Anson Dorrance and former U.S. Men's National Team player Hugo Perez at noon Aug. 3.

The weekend begins with a memorial service and Hall of Fame Kick-Off Social on Aug. 1.

The fifth annual Hall of Fame Golf Tournament will follow Aug. 2 at the Oneonta Country Club. Cost to participate in the 18-hole event is $125 and includes greens fees, a shared cart, practice putting green, a grill lunch and prizes.

Foursomes can sign up as a team for the tournament, which opens with a shotgun start.

Also Aug. 2, the Hall will host an American Youth Soccer Organization tournament, followed by the President's Reception and Hall of Fame Banquet on that night inside the museum.

After the dinner, the Big 3 Enshrinement Ceremony will recognize the newest Hall of Famers from the AYSO, the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in the Museum Atrium.

A luncheon will follow the 2008 Induction Ceremony on Aug. 3.
